Driver sought in girl’s hit-and-run death
GREENSBORO, NC (AP) — Police are searching for a motorist who struck and killed an 8-year-old girl as she crossed a North Carolina highway in the dark.
The News & Record of Greensboro reports that the state Highway Patrol identified the victim as Marissa Shelton.
Authorities say they are still looking for the car believed to have hit her about 9:30 p.m. Thursday on U.S. 29 just outside the Greensboro city limits.
Shelton’s bike was found Friday a short distance from where she was struck. Troopers the bike may have been wedged under the vehicle after the impact.
A motorist told troopers he saw the girl riding across the highway and turned around to catch up with her. By the time he got there, she had already been hit.
