The Seahawks hosted Coastal Carolina on Tuesday night. Below is a match recap from UNCW Sports Information:

Sophomore Christi Laite recorded a match-high 16 kills and sophomore Haley Collins equaled her season-high with 29 digs to lead UNCW to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-23) sweep of Coastal Carolina Tuesday at Hanover Hall.

The Seahawks improved to 5-6 overall as they won the annual meeting between the regional rivals. The Chanticleers, meanwhile, slipped to 4-7 on the campaign.

Laite committed just five errors in 32 total attempts for a .344 hitting percentage to power a UNCW lineup that combined for 36 kills and a .155 attack percentage for the match. Freshman Leah Gagliardi chipped in eight kills and fellow freshman McKenzie Keightley pitched six spikes without an error to finish with a .500 hitting percentage.

Defensively, Collins was joined in double-figure digs by junior Jennifer Mallard, who pitched in 10, as the Seahawks finished with 58 digs for the evening. Laite and sophomore Siera Young highlighted UNCW’s effort at the net with four total blocks each.

Sophomore Megan Laffin tallied eight kills to lead Coastal, who was limited to just 28 kills and a .070 hitting percentage for the match. Sophomore Sam Skryd dished out 19 assists and added a team-high 11 digs to finish with a double-double.

UNCW never trailed in the opening frame, racing out to an early 9-2 lead before closing the set on an 11-4 run to record a 25-14 decision. The Seahawks combined for 10 kills in the first set and took advantage of 11 Chanticleer errors (six attack, five service) during the stanza.

Trailing 14-9 midway through the second set, five unanswered points by the Seahawks leveled the score at 14-all. The two sides would battle back and forth until, with the score tied at 22-all, back-to-back kills by Mallard and Laite would spark the Seahawks to a 25-23 victory.

The third set was another close affair that saw a total of eight ties and three lead changes. The two teams once again battled to 22-all deadlock before the Seahawks use a pair of kills from Gagliardi and Keightley to ignite a 3-1 spurt and another 25-23 decision.

UNCW returns to action Friday as they open the College of Charleston Hampton Inn Invitational with matches against Wyoming (Noon) and the host Cougars (7 p.m.).
