Winds, shoaling impact Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry run
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Service on the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry run on the North Carolina coast is being affected by extreme shoaling and unusually low tides.
The state Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division said Monday that travelers could run into delays, load weight restrictions and possible suspensions of service. A statement issued Monday says brisk northeast winds, lower than normal tides and the narrow channel has created a safety issue that requires constant monitoring by the division.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is working to resolve the problem because the channel falls under federal jurisdiction.
On Sunday, some visitors had to remain on either side of the run when operations were suspended due to the unsafe conditions.
