Man suffers burns in overnight fire

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man is recovering Monday morning after getting burned in a fire.

A spokesperson with the Wilmington Fire Department says crews were called to a wooded area off the 2800 block of S. 17th St. at 12:09 a.m. Monday morning. The scene was cleared by 2:25 a.m..

The area was being used as a homeless camp and was about 50 x 100 ft. Investigators with the Fire Marshal’s office determined the fire was an accident and started after a grill turned over.

One man was treated at the scene for burns on his hands, face, and feet after he tried to put out the fire himself. He was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center and is scheduled to be airlifted to the UNC Burn Center for more treatment.

No one else was hurt and no other damage was reported.
