WPD: Report shows use of force incidents down 15 percent
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Police Department says its 2016 Professional Standards Report is completed. The report looked at employee conduct and disciplinary process. The report outlines WPD’s 2016 complaint history, use of force numbers and measures many other employee related interactions.
Here are some of the highlights:
- The number of internal investigations decreased by 40%
- The number of citizen complaint allegations decreased by 61%
- Policy violations by employees decreased by 38%
- Calls for service increased by 3.6% (189,495 to 196,429)
- The number of arrests increased by 5.3%, the number of use of force incidents decreased by 15%
The Professional Standards Unit conducted 50 investigations in 2016. These cases involved 107 alleged violations of WPD policy. 27 investigations were from citizen complaints and 23 were initiated within the agency. The report states a majority of investigations originated from citizen complaints, which is a consistent trend from years past.
There were also 11 uses of deadly force in 2016, which were all investigated by the Professional Standards Unit. The first incident resulted in no injuries and the remaining 10 involved animals being euthanized after being struck by cars.
