Leland man pleads guilty to tax evasion

RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — A Brunswick County man pleaded guilty in Wake County court to tax charges.

Daniel B. Leggett, 31, of Leland, pleaded guilty to three counts of attempting to evade or defeat NC Individual Income Tax.

Leggett claimed a false number of withholding allowances during the tax years 2013, 2014, and 2015. These actions caused Leggett’s employer, the North Carolina State Ports Authority, to not withhold state individual income tax from his wages.

Judge Louis B. Meyer, III sentenced Leggett to a five-month minimum, 15 month maximum prison term. The sentence was suspended and Leggett was placed on supervised probation for 5 years.

Leggett was also ordered to pay $6,174 in restitution and must complete 100 hours of community service within one year, or pay a $1,500 fine.
