CFPUA begins twice daily updates on GenX work
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As questions continue about the toxin GenX in the area’s drinking water supply as well as when the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority knew about it, the CFPUA Board’s chair plans to provide regular updates.
According to a news release, Mike Brown will provide two updates each weekday – one in the morning and one in the afternoon – with information on activity surrounding GenX.
Brown’s first update Monday afternoon discussed CFPUA’s meeting with Black & Veatch, an engineering, consulting and construction company that worked with CFPUA to upgrade and expand its Sweeney Water Treatment Plant about four years ago.
JUNE 19, CHAIRMAN’S AFTERNOON UPDATE
Frank Styers, CFPUA chief operations officer, hosted Black & Veatch officials at its Sweeney Water Plant today to discuss options for reducing the amount of GenX compound in treated water.
Black & Veatch representatives included:
In-Person:
Nick Burns, professional engineer, director of Water Treatment Technology out of Dallas, TX
Brian Townsend, UV Technology Leader, based in Charlotte, NC
On the phone:
Jeff Coggins, professional engineer and project manager; Coggins was the project manager when the Sweeney plant was expanded and upgraded approximately 4 years ago
The purpose of the meeting today was for Black & Veatch to gather information. Black & Veatch will provide a scope of the work to CFPUA this week on work they propose to perform, including looking at various short and long-term solutions to potentially remove the GenX compound during the treatment process at the Sweeney Plant.
Black & Veatch will provide CFPUA with its first deliverable—approximately three weeks following approval of scope—that will provide their preliminary recommendations.
CFPUA will provide regular updates to the public during each step of this process.
