Cancer rates in Cape Fear under scrutiny

BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — The NC Department of Health and Human Services is examining cancer rates in the Cape Fear region over recent decades to compare them with statewide rates, according to a news release from Brunswick County.

Since Chemours admitted the presence of GenX in the Cape Fear River may have started decades before initially indicted, DHHS researchers are examining cancer rates over a wider time frame.

Meanwhile, scientists also stopped at Brunswick County’s Northwest Water Treatment Plant to collect water samples to test for GenX. They’re collecting samples at various points along the Cape Fear River and at water treatment facilities, including CFPUA’s Sweeney Water Treatment Plant.

Brunswick County officials are also consulting with state toxicologists for additional information and guidance regarding reported levels of chemicals and EPA Health Advisory levels, including the chemical 1,4-Dioxane. All test results and information will be shared publicly. While Brunswick County works to learn more about 1,4-Dioxane, an EPA fact sheet is here.

Officials are also engaging specialized services to review current water treatment practices and make recommendations to Brunswick County Public Utilities.
