UNCW film studies professor dies after sudden illness

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A UNCW professor died suddenly over the weekend.

Hannah Frank, a professor in the Film Studies department, died around 1:00 Monday morning, according to family members.

Frank came to UNCW in 2016.  A post on the UNCW Film Studies Facebook page says she taught courses on the history of animation, Russian and Soviet cinema, and special effects. She also worked on a book manuscript on the visual aesthetics of popular American animated cartoons of the mid-20th century. Her other research interests included films and videos that reside at the intersection of documentary, the avant-garde, and animation. She was also an experimental animator.  She received her Ph.D. in Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago.
