Shelters open doors for Hurricane Dorian evacuees

NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WWAY)– Shelters are open now across the Cape Fear and many people are already in place.

John J. Blair Elementary School in Wilmington is one place that has opened its doors.

As a reminder, this is the original Blair School off Market Street.

County staff worked with the sheriff’s office to sign people in.

Even members of the fire and rescue team stopped by to drop off water.

Evacuee, Matt Rollins says he’s happy to be there.

Rollins expressed, “Well I tell you, it’s a safe haven. You know I was trying to leave town early in the jeep and went to go park in the parking lot and check on the greyhound bus line, and they were closed up, and I was just kind of stranded,”

He also told us he’d be staying after the storm to assist with those who need help.
