Inmate accused of shanking cellmate in Whiteville


WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — An inmate serving time at Columbus Correctional in Whiteville is now accused of stabbing his cellmate earlier this month.

Dwight Sharp, 26, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office says Sharp stabbed his cellmate, James Munn, 49, with a shank on September 6. Munn received injuries to his head, ear, and neck. Munn was transferred to Sampson Correctional two days later, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.

Online records show Sharp was convicted in September of 2016 for receiving a stolen vehicle, speeding to elude arrest, drug possession, and carrying a concealed weapon.

He received five infractions in April. The infractions are for involvement with a gang or security risk group, assault person w/weapon, interfere with staff, disobey order, and profane language
