Brunswick County Schools says buses 251 and 253 were involved in the crash. Sixty-four students were on the buses at the time. Twenty-six students have been transported to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, the school district says.
Parents of children who were on the buses should report to Virginia Williamson Elementary School. Students not being transported are being taken back to school to reunite with parents. Emergency officials are waiting at the school and will let parents of students who were hurt know which hospital they were taken to.
New Hanover Regional Medical Center says 28 people were transported there and are being assessed right now. No word on the extent of injuries. A Novant Health spokeswoman says three kids, all have which been released, who were involved with the crash were treated there. The conditions of those patients are still unknown.
WWAY spoke to parents and a student who was on one of the buses, all were a little shaken up but glad everyone is going to be ok.
“Oh it was scary, my little girl she was, we were tore up. It was terrible,” one concerned parent said.
Brantley, a kindergartner at Virginia Williamson was on one of the buses, he said it was scary.
“I just fell and I didn’t know what happened,” Brantley said. “And they said come on. And I didn’t know what happened. And people was crying, then I cried. Then I got off on the very back.”
One father had two of his three kids on one of the buses. His daughter was checked out for a minor head injury. He said buses desperately need seat belts.
“Well I was hoping everyone was ok obviously. You never know with these things,” another concerned parent said. “We tell the children all the time behave on the bus because there’s school bus accidents all the time. And boom here we are. It happens. So I’m hoping they’re not too traumatized from it.”
Highway Patrol is investigating to determine what exactly happened.
