Victim identified after struck, killed by van on Carolina Beach Road

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police have identified Donald Ray Gibson, 62, as the victim in the traffic fatality Saturday night.

Gibson was attempting to cross Carolina Beach Road with a shopping cart around 5:30 p.m., but was not in a crosswalk when the accident occurred. The victim was initially run over by a van, and thrown, and subsequently struck by multiple vehicles.

Carolina Beach Road was closed for approximately 3 hours.

WPD says they do not anticipate filing charges.

Police remind pedestrians to always use caution while crossing the street and do so at designated areas. Drivers should be aware of their surroundings.
