Wilmington man sentenced for selling heroin

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington man will spend between seven and ten years in prison for selling heroin.

Michael Bowens, 45, pleaded guilty to Sell Schedule II Controlled Substance, Possession with Intent to Sell/Deliver a Schedule II CS
and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He also admitted his status as a habitual felon, according to a news release from the district attorney’s office.

In September of 2016, detectives heard from a confidential informant that Bowens was selling heroin. Detectives used the informant to buy heroin from Bowens.

Bowens agreed to sell the informant 10 bags of heroin for $100. Detectives saw the confidential informant meet with Bowens, who got into the informant’s car and was dropped off in the area of 8th and Market Streets.

Detectives detained Bowens, who had the funds given to the informant by the Sheriff’s Office. The informant handed over 8 bags of a powdery substance believed to be heroin. The defendant admitted selling the informant the substance.

When it was tested by the State Crime Lab, the substance was discovered to be fentanyl.

Bowens was previously convicted of Financial Card Fraud, PWISD Counterfeit Controlled Substance, and Sale of a Controlled Substance, which allowed him to be sentenced as a habitual felon.
