UNCW to receive $25 million to support healthcare initiatives

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The University of North Carolina Wilmington is getting a financial shot in the arm from two former Seahawks.
Dr. Yousry Sayed and his wife Linda are making a $25 million gift commitment to support healthcare initiatives and teacher recruitment and retention at the university. Yousry taught at UNCW, while Linda graduated from there.
The announcement was made during UNCW’s Board of Trustees meeting on Friday.
The Sayed’s gift is the largest philanthropic commitment in the university’s history. The commitment will allocate $20 million over five years for the advancement of UNCW’s medical education, clinical care, research and healthcare accessibility programs. $5 million is designated to programs to recruit prospective teachers, with a portion of the funding used to support scholarships for individuals transitioning to a teaching career.
“Our gift is an investment in future teachers and healthcare professionals who will serve their communities,” said Dr. Sayed. “We want to empower students with the knowledge and skills to help others lead productive and fulfilling lives. Linda and I believe in the mission and vision of this great university, and we are pleased to contribute in a way that will allow UNCW to continue to grow in service to our region and state.”
