‘Trippin’ out’: 911 call released after man allegedly shoots in air, gets naked
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man accused of wrecking his car, firing shots and getting naked faces several charges.
The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office says Derrick Anthony Dunbar, 33, is charged with going armed to the terror of the public, indecent exposure and violation of a local ordinance.
New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer said after the initial crash, Dunbar got out and shot four or five times into the air.
That’s when Brewer said Dunbar got naked and ran into the woods nearby. Brewer says Dunbar then ran back to the car and got dressed. By then, deputies confronted Dunbar and took him into custody. No one was hurt.
Dunbar is in jail under $2,500 bond.
We tried to talk to Dunbar in jail, but declined our request. Dunbar did tell us this was out of character for him and said someone gave him something that had him “trippin’ out”.
A 911 call from a person driving near Bayshore Drive explains to dispatch what they saw.
Caller: “I don’t know what’s going on but they just came by going 100 miles per hour and then ran off the road and wrecked. Now, they are coming back in to the middle of the road with their pants off. I don’t know what’s going on.”
Dispatch: “Was another vehicle involved?”
Caller: “No, a single car accident… Oh s**t, he’s got a f***ing gun!”
Dispatch: “Can I get a description?”
Caller: “I turned around, someone is shooting a gun up in the air.”
Dispatch: “How many shots have been fired?”
Caller: “They shot like 3 or 4… The person looks like they are losing their mind.”
