Man charged with murder after woman dies in Wilmington shooting

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man is charged with murder after allegedly shooting a woman to death overnight in Wilmington.

Ray Anthony Southers, 36, was arrested Thursday.

The Wilmington Police Department responded around 12 a.m. Thursday to the 1300 block of S. Fourth Street.

WPD says when officers arrived, they found 36-year-old Jody Marie Lopez shot. EMS transported her to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, but she later died.

No word on the motive.

Southers is charged with first degree murder, possession of firearm by felon and assault by pointing gun for the murder.

He is being held in jail without bond.
