One killed in crash on US 17 in Brunswick Co.
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — One person is dead after a Tuesday morning crash on US 17 just west of Shallotte.
According to Sgt. Matthew King with Highway Patrol, around 9:45 a.m., a trooper responded to a two-vehicle crash near Smith Ave.
Sgt. King said an investigation revealed a 2013 Chevy van was traveling north slowly because it was conducting a survey on fiber optic cable on the shoulder of the road. The van was using flashing lights to warn of its slow speed. The driver of a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee failed to see the van was driving slowly and rear-ended it.
Officials have identified the driver and passenger of the Chevy van as Robert Wellington Odom, of Holly Springs, and Donald Ezra Blose, of Garner. Both were taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The driver of the Jeep was identified as Joshua Andrew Challeen, 43, of Leland. He was also taken to NHRMC and later died from his injuries. Challeen leaves behind a wife and two daughters.
Officials said no charges have been filed in the crash.
