Wilmington gang member convicted of nightclub shooting

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington gang member was found guilty Thursday for shooting a man outside a Castle Street club in May 2017.

Kolton James Thompson, 28, was convicted of Assault with a Deadly Weapon with the Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

Judge Kent Harrell sentenced him to at least 11 years behind bars.

Shortly after 2 a.m. on May 7, 2017, officers responded to the Sportsmen’s Club at 1111 Castle Street.

The victim, Angeleos Williams, 34, had already been transported to New Hanover Regional Hospital by a person at the scene. Williams was shot once in the right thigh and suffered serious internal injuries that required multiple surgeries and an extended hospital stay.

Despite finding dozens of people still at the club, officers were unable to locate anyone who would provide information about the incident.

However, they were able to obtain surveillance images that captured the shooting and ultimately led to the identification of Thompson as the shooter.

He was arrested more than a month later.

Thompson had previously been convicted of selling heroin in 2016.
