Artists wanted to help design Wilmington airport’s terminal expansion

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Calling all artists! Your creative touch is wanted as part of Wilmington International Airport’s terminal expansion.

ILM along with the Arts Council of Wilmington and New Hanover County are requesting proposals for three public art commissions as part of ILM’s terminal expansion.

Proposals for two separate terrazzo floor designs and the design, fabrication, and installation of one three-dimensional artwork will be accepted from artists residing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

Winning concepts will capture the spirit of the coastal Cape Fear Region through permanent installations that welcome ILM travelers, enhance the airport facility, and contribute to the local cultural aesthetic.

“This RFP is an opportunity to integrate artistic interpretations of our community in the Terminal Expansion Project,” Airport Director Julie Wisley said. “We look forward to showcasing permanent artworks that symbolize the Cape Fear Region and will remind travelers of their time spent here.”

Initial application packages are due by August 1.

The Arts Council of Wilmington/NHC, in partnership with the ILM Arts Committee, will manage the application and selection process.

Finalists will be announced on September 1.

A minimum of three artists/teams will be given $1000 to provide a fully-realized maquette for consideration by the selection panel by November 1, 2020.  The winning design(s) will be presented to the Airport Authority Board for final approval.

“The Arts Council is excited to partner with the Wilmington International Airport to commission signature artworks which serve as welcoming gateways to the airport and which set the stage for the rich arts experiences on offer in southeastern North Carolina,” Executive Director of the Arts Council Rhonda Bellamy said.
