Hoggard high students walk out on anniversary of Columbine shooting
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Even with the knowledge of being punished for skipping school, Hoggard High School students took part in a nationally planned school walk out.
About a dozen students left school just before 10 a.m. to walk down to the intersection of South College Road and Shipyard Boulevard in front of Rite Aid to stand in protest.
Their signs called for an end to gun violence and that’s something these students say they want to see happen soon.
Today is the anniversary of the Columbine shooting and these students say they want to make their voices heard.
“At this point, I’m past patiently waiting for congress to step up to the plate and do something about it,” student Vivian Hornstein said. “They’ve been talking about change for 20+ years. It’s time to talk about change and it’s time to make the change now and step up to the plate, and that’s what we’re out here to do.”
According to a school spokesperson, the students who left campus will receive detention.
A Columbine remembrance rally is also planned for tonight in front of the Federal courthouse in downtown Wilmington.
