Brunswick Nuclear Plant’s warning siren malfunctions AGAIN
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — There was not an emergency at the Brunswick Nuclear Plant, even though a warning siren went off in the Boiling Spring Lakes area Monday morning.
Boiling Spring Lakes resident Carol Jacobs wasn’t fazed by the siren.
“I’m just used to that happening and I feel, if you turn on the television, it would tell you what to do. It doesn’t concern me,” Jacobs said.
This is the second time an emergency siren has sounded since Thursday, when another malfunction caused the siren to go off in Caswell Beach.
In an email, Brunswick Nuclear Plant spokeswoman Karen Williams said the plant is operating safely. Williams said the siren malfunctioned in the emergency planning zone surrounding Brunswick Nuclear Plant in the Boiling Spring Lakes area.
“We’re committed to having those sirens function as they should and to not have malfunctions. We’ll work very, very quickly to address any concerns, but we want to make sure that we fix the right thing,” Williams said.
There are 38 sirens within a 10-mile radius of the plant in Southport. Williams says you should turn to local media if the sirens are going off.
“If you’re within the 10-mile EPZ and you hear a siren, what you should do is you should tune in to local TV and radio to get more information,” Williams said.
Williams says people may think they should evacuate if there was a real emergency at the plant, but that is not always the best course of action.
