Local chefs compete in NCRLA Chef Showdown

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY/WCTI) — Local chefs from the Wilmington area had the chance to face off in the first of three regional semi-finals for a chance to compete in the third annual NC Restaurant & Lodging Association’s Chef Showdown.

Chefs from all around eastern North Carolina gathered at Lawson’s Landing Cafe in New Bern Tuesday for the competition.

Paul Boswell from Henry’s Restaurant & Bar in Wilmington, Sam Cahoon from Savorez in Wilmington, Joseph Heskin from Oceanic in Wrightsville Beach, Nicholas Chavez from the Cape Fear Country Club and others took part in the showdown.

They prepared and served tasting-size portions that were judged by three culinary experts.

“I try to be calm, cool and collected,” Nicholas Chavez said. “Like I said, it was my first competition so I was definitely a little nervous, but you know, I let my food do my talking for me.”

The regional semi-finals took place Tuesday.

The top 21 highest-rated chefs across the three regional competitions will progress to finals.

The main event will happen August 27 in Charlotte.
