Celebrate International Bacon Day Saturday!

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Saturday is International Bacon Day, an unofficial observance of all things bacon!  It is celebrated in the United States the Saturday before Labor Day.

The day was conceived in 2004 by a group of Colorado University-Boulder graduate students. Celebrations can include anything that has bacon.  That includes social gatherings with bacon themes, gifting bacon to friends and family, and most importantly cooking with bacon.

Famous Toastery restaurant in Wilmington is celebrating with the Good Morning Burger.  Chef Ivan Rangel says the burger combines all the classic burger flavors, but adds brie, a sunny side up egg, and plenty of tasty applewood smoked bacon.

Here is his recipe:

Ingredients: 1 burger bun, 1 8 ounce beef patty, green lettuce, 2 slices tomato, 1 tablespoon mayonnaise, 1 ounce brie cheese, 2 thick slices of applewood smoked bacon, salt, pepper, and one tablespoon butter.

To make:  Heat pan or griddle to 400 degrees, season patty with salt and pepper, melt butter in pan and grill bun.  Cook burger to desired temperature and remove from pan.  Cook egg in pan to desired preference (Famous Toastery recommends sunny side up).  Melt brie over burger and assemble with all remaining ingredients.  Enjoy!
