Work, closure to start next week for US 74/76 interchange at Hallsboro Road
COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The NC Department of Transportation says it will close Hallsboro Road at US 74/76 east of Whiteville as crews start work on an interchange.
The closure will start Monday. The DOT says the closure means traffic on Hallsboro Road will be unable to access US 74/76 and vice versa at that location. A detour will direct drivers onto NC 214, Red Hill Road (US 74 Business) and Whitehall Road.
The interchange will have a bridge that carries Hallsboro Road traffic over the highway, as well as ramps allowing traffic to enter the highway without stopping. It will replace what is referred to as an at-grade intersection with an interchange and overpass that the DOT will decrease the risk of crashes.
The work is scheduled to be done by May 2020.
In February the DOT awarded a nearly $9.4 million contract to BMCO Construction Inc. of Lumberton for the project. The state is working to increase traffic flow and safety on US 74 by building more interchanges.
