Parole granted for man sentenced to life for rape
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A man convicted of rape in New Hanover County and sentenced to life in prison has been granted parole.
Shellman Hughes, 72, was convicted in 1980 for first degree rape and first degree sexual offense.
He became eligible for parole due to a change in the state’s sentencing laws. Parole is now eliminated for crimes committed after October 1, 1994. Hughes was sentenced under previous sentencing guidelines.
