ADVISORY: New Hanover Co. pipeline work to cause large gas flare

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Piedmont Natural Gas will perform routine maintenance on a pipeline in New Hanover County next week, a process which will cause a a large flame people nearby will notice.

Piedmont says their work will involve a process called flaring, where excess natural gas is released and burned off. Flaring produces a tall flame which can be seen from a distance, as well as a loud noise and possibly a whistling sound. People who live nearby may also smell natural gas.

The maintenance will take place on Fredrickson Road, which is near the Highway 421 and I-140 interchange.

Piedmont says they have reached out to law enforcement and first responders in case nearby residents are unaware of the process and call 911.

Piedmont says local fire departments and Piedmont personnel will monitor and manage the procedure.

The work is scheduled to begin on Monday and should finish by August 29, weather permitting.
