Former Pender Co. deputy pleads guilty to assault on female

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A former Pender County deputy has to surrender his law enforcement certification and can never apply to become a law enforcement officer again.

That’s part of the sentence Melvin Acevedo received after he pleaded guilty to two counts of assault on a female Wednesday.

In 2016, the sheriff’s office fired Acevedo after they investigated a complaint that he groped a woman during a domestic violence call.

Acevedo also received a 30 day sentence and 60 day suspended sentence.

Acevedo has another court date next week.

His first trial ended in a hung jury in early March.
