Film documents Wrightsville Beach lifeguards’ tryout process

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (StarNews) — Housed under the Wrightsville Beach Fire Department, Ocean Rescue is an exclusive team that holds yearly tryouts. This past summer saw 70 candidates seek a spot on the team, and the 2017 tryouts have now been documented on film by an all-local film crew.

The documentary is available for streaming at Amazon.com.

Charlie Ball, a local director and friend to Ocean Rescue Director Dave Baker, first came across the idea for “Ocean Rescue: Making the Squad” when he was driving down the beach one morning with his old friend, drinking coffee.

Baker asked Ball if he and his film friends would be interested in filming a story on the Ocean Rescue lifeguards. Ball and Baker had been friends for almost 20 years, dating back to their time as lifeguards together in the Outer Banks. Because of this friendship, Ball said he has seen Baker transform Ocean Rescue over his 13-year tenure as director into something entirely unique.
