Witness photos lead to ID of downtown Wilmington hit-and-run suspect

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Do you know this woman? Wilmington Police are searching for 52-year-old Shelly Carol Chavis in connection to a hit and run that happened in late August.

Chavis allegedly rear-ended the victim who was driving south on North Third Street around 1:45 p.m. on August 27. Chavis drove away from the crash scene, without stopping or exchanging information, that caused $1,300 damage to the victim’s car, according to police.

Before Chavis left, WPD says a witness was able to take photos of the suspect vehicle’s tag. Police said though Chavis is not the owner of the vehicle, an investigation determined she was the driver during the incident.

She is charged with hit and run leaving the scene with property damage, driving while license revoked and failure to reduce speed.

Anyone with information on Chavis’ whereabouts is asked to contact WPD at (910) 343-3609 or use Text A Tip.
