Wilmington City Council holds budget meeting, discusses new development

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington City Council kicked off its budget retreat to talk about next year’s spending Friday morning.

Mayor Bill Saffo says the city is looking to rewrite it’s development code. Saffo says the current code is outdated and the city needs to keep up with booming development.

In the meeting, Council talked about the importance of having the community’s help.

Saffo says they want to cater to growing needs.

“We do not want to have properties that flood over and over again. We want to make sure that we’re building smarter. We want to make sure that we’re building in a way that is resilient. We want to make sure that we’re building in a way that beautifies our community, and not destroys the look of our community.”

In response to Hurricane Florence, Saffo says they need to develop in different ways. The budget will be introduced in June of 2019.
