Technology playing crucial role in solving hit-and-run cases

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Technology is an extra eye is the sky is a big help for the Wilmington Police Department and investigators like Capt. Kathy Cochran.

“We’re getting better due to citizen’s responses with information and security cameras. We’ve got a lot of security cameras in the downtown areas, businesses and even personal surveillance systems are helping us,” Cochran said.

recent hit-and-run on Rutledge Drive in Wilmington was caught on camera.

Capt. Cochran says that there are a million reasons that hit-and-runs occur, such as carelessness, driving under the influence and, of course, texting.

In addition to more cameras, people are also reaching out with more information.

“[It] could just be calling in to speak to the investigator and give the information that they know, if they’re a witness and they don’t mind being a witness. Text-a-Tip has also been utilized,” Cochran said.

She says if you do hit someone while behind the wheel, but choose to stay and call for help, rather than leave, you could save the police a headache and someone’s life.
