Crews respond to fire in Pender County, one person airlifted to burn center

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Rocky Point Fire Department responded to a significant woods fire Wednesday evening in the vicinity of US Highway 117 and NC Highway 133.
Pender County Emergency Management Director Tommy Batson said a residential fire spread to a boat, vehicles, an outside building and the woods.
Officials said the fire spanned approximately 12 acres.
One citizen sustained burn injuries during the incident.
The Pender County Fire Marshal’s Office said the individual was treated on-scene by Pender EMS & Fire before being airlifted to the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center at UNC Chapel Hill for
specialized care.
The patient’s current condition has not been released at this time.
Pender County said NC Highway 133 in Rocky Point was briefly closed due to the active fire response on Wednesday evening.
Responding agencies included Rocky Point Fire Department, Pender EMS & Fire, Burgaw Fire Department, Penderlea Fire Department, New Hanover County Fire & Rescue, NC Forest Service, and the Pender County Sheriff’s Office.
