Former Babcock and Wilcox employees reunite 43 years after Wilmington plant closed

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — More than four decades after Babcock & Wilcox closed its Wilmington facility, former employees gathered to reminisce about their time at one of the Port City’s major manufacturers.

Former Babcock & Wilcox employees held their 43rd annual reunion Thursday at the Golden Corral in Wilmington, giving longtime colleagues an opportunity to reconnect and share memories.

Babcock & Wilcox opened its Wilmington operation in 1951. The company manufactured industrial and marine boilers used to generate steam for industrial facilities, utility companies and military ships.

Former New Hanover County Sheriff Joseph McQueen was among those who worked for the company before beginning his career in law enforcement.

McQueen said the annual reunion gives him a chance to reconnect with former colleagues, some of whom he had not seen in decades.

“A lot of them here now, I remember some of them, and it brings back a lot of memories after 30-something years,” McQueen said. “But I really enjoy seeing a lot of them. It’s been great to see them.”

The Wilmington facility also had an impact beyond manufacturing, contributing to local organizations and projects during its years in operation.

Before Babcock & Wilcox closed its doors in 1983, the company donated nearly two acres of land to New Hanover County Schools.
