Mother calls 911 after daughter handcuffed by fake cop over alleged robbery in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A 911 call is revealing more information about a fake cop that handcuffed a woman Sunday afternoon.

Wilmington police say they received a report around 2:30 p.m. about a man impersonating a police officer who had stopped and detained a woman earlier in the day.

The report to 911 dispatch came from the victim’s mother.

Caller: I was calling because I’m a concerned parent. My daughter had just went to a vaper store right there on the corner of 31st and Market or Montgomery and Market, either way you want to call it. She said there was an officer there named Jakes that stopped her and handcuffed her and took her back to the store and said something about her stealing some cigarettes. So I need to know if you have an Officer Jakes working.

Dispatch: What was the last name? Do you remember?

Caller: No, he just told her that his name was Jakes and he wasn’t driving a unit car. He didn’t give her a badge number or anything.

Dispatch: Okay, so you said it happened at a vape store?

Caller: Yes ma’am … right in between 31st and Montgomery, or Market.

Dispatch: And this was your daughter that was picked up there?

Caller: Yes ma’am, she was walking from there and she said that an officer came up to her and detained her and handcuffed her and stuff. He took her back to the store and said something about a robbery from that store is what he told her and took her back and people told the officer that it was not her.

Dispatch: Is your daughter still in custody?

Caller: No, she’s not in custody. She’s home. I just need to find out why is she being arrest like that if it wasn’t her and if it had been called in to verify who this officer is.

Caller: She said it was a black Dodge charger, unmarked … He was a dark-skinned male with a faded cut, close cut, and a tattoo on his forearm.

Dispatch then says that a police officer would contact her to get more information.

In a news release by WPD on Monday, it states the man was also wearing a ballistic vest with “POLICE” on the front. The suspect is also described as 5’7″ and 200-216 pounds.

The woman was not hurt.
