SBI releases new details about shooting involving off-duty deputy near Monkey Junction

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation was requested by the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office to investigate a shooting in the 4500 block of Barnards Landing Road in Wilmington.

It happened at approximately 12:42 p.m.

The SBI said that according to eyewitnesses, the shooting happened following an incident where 40-year-old Bart Anthony Coniglio forcibly entered a family member’s residence on Barnards Landing Road. The family member and a friend who were inside the home, exited the residence and ran to a nearby neighbor’s home.

The neighbor is a deputy with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and was off-duty at the time.

The family member entered the off-duty deputy’s home as Coniglio chased after them.

Coniglio then forcibly entered the deputy’s home where a physical altercation ensued that resulted in the off-duty deputy subsequently shooting Coniglio.

Coniglio was transported to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he is currently being treated.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.
