Dog that survived alligator attack named first-ever marshal of Southport Fourth of July parade

SOUTHPORT, N.C.  (WWAY) — A black Labrador retriever whose remarkable recovery after surviving an alligator attack has been named the first-ever dog marshal of the North Carolina Fourth of July Festival Parade in Southport.

One year ago, Strike was attacked by an alligator while swimming in the Cape Fear River. His owner, Bonner Herring, jumped into the water after seeing the dog break free from the alligator.

Strike suffered internal bleeding and three fractures in his back right leg, requiring emergency veterinary care.

After months of treatment and rehabilitation, Herring said Strike has made a full recovery.

“Last year Strike was re-learning how to walk. I was carrying him up two flights of stairs during the Fourth of July,” Herring said. “This year he has an opportunity to lead the parade.”

Festival organizers selected Strike as the inaugural dog marshal in recognition of his resilience and recovery.

The North Carolina Fourth of July Festival Parade is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on July 4 at the intersection of Howe and Moore streets in Southport. Strike will lead the parade as its honorary marshal.
