NICE WORK! Ferry crew gets award for rescuing kiteboarder

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry crew rescued a kiteboarder after he got tangled on a navigation tower in the river earlier this year. Now, they are being honored.

Back in April, officials say the captain of the MV Fort Fisher noticed the man and his gear tangled in the Federal Point rear range beacon.

When Captain Barry West saw the kite-boarder struggling, he launched the ferry’s lifeboat.

Crew members pulled him aboard and took him to the terminal.

NCDOT tweeted this photo Wednesday of the crew receiving the “Extra Mile Award” from the department’s secretary.
