New traffic pattern plans come to Market and Kerr

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Some big changes are coming to a busy Wilmington intersection. Left turns will become a thing of the past for drivers at Kerr Avenue and Market Street.

There will be a shift in traffic to help widen the corner of Kerr and Market. This new pattern eliminates left turns onto Market Street from Kerr Ave. Drivers coming from MLK Parkway will now have to turn left onto Wilmington Street Extension and go around Target to get to Market Street. If you’re coming from Randall Parkway, you will turn left onto Cinema Drive to get to Market Street. Some drivers are not looking forward to the change.

“There’s not really great signage to know that you have to go around New Centre or by the movie theatre. So I think they need a lot better signage. I agree that Market Street is very crowded and this intersection is quite cumbersome but I’m not sure if this is the right solution right now,” driver Blythe Bennnett said.

Kerr avenue will become four lanes at the Market Street intersection. NCDOT says these improvements will ultimately improve safety and reduce congestion in the area.
