Gov. Easley rejects plan to ease boat towing rules

RALEIGH — Gov. Mike Easley has vetoed a measure that would have eased boat towing restrictions for North Carolina motorists.

Easley rejected the measure on Sunday, citing safety concerns. The governor said he believes the legislation would put families at risk.

The bill would allow drivers to pull boats up to 10 feet wide on any day of the week without obtaining a special permit. Watercraft up to 9 1/2 feet could be pulled at night.

The veto should come as no surprise to state lawmakers.

A top Easley aide cautioned lawmakers in July that the governor was not pleased with the proposed legislation.

Legislative leaders must now decide whether they will try to override the veto.
