Paid parking a possibility for Oak Island’s future?

OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — One big perk of going to the beach at Oak island is free parking. Many people take full advantage of it, but could it become a thing of the past? If the Town of Oak Island has its way, paid parking could be in beach town’s future. For some, like Angie Rash, parking in Oak Island is effortless.

“It’s been a really convenient experience, Angie Rash said. “There are multiple lots where you can park for free and it’s easy beach access and it’s one of the reasons why we come down to Oak Island.”

For others, like Eric Dawson, it can be a bit of a hassle.

“We were down earlier in the week and we had a little bit of trouble parking, Eric Dawson said. “So we just kept riding around until a spot opened up.”

Oak Island Mayor Cin Brochure says the town is in the process of making a proposal to see what costs would be to put in mobile pay for parking spaces. Some people don’t mind paying, while others don’t like the idea.

“We don’t know if it’s safe to park here or if you can park here if you need a permit, Dawson said. “You don’t need a permit so if it’s a parking lot and we have to pay, we know we’re safe and we would definitely pay,” Dawson said.

“That’s one of the nice draws to come to this beach, Rash said. “Because you can find a parking space and you’re not having to pay for it because you know we’re paying for other things at Oak Island. So i don’t think that’s a great idea. I don’t see it as a hectic situation,” Rash said.

If the change ends up going through there will be no meters and people will pay online for parking.

This proposal still has a long way to go, but if it all goes through residents who use the online application can be exempt from paying the parking fee.
