Surf City Police bust alleged meth lab

SURF CITY, NC (NEWS RELEASE) -- On Saturday February 12, 2011 Investigators from the Surf City Police Department received information from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation about the possibility of a Clandestine Methamphetamine Laboratory starting in the area of Surf City.

Surf City Police Department with the assistance of Holly Ridge Police department, maintained surveillance on the site believed to be manufacturing Methamphetamine throughout the night of 02/12/2011 and into the evening of 02/13/2011. During this time Law Enforcement Officers were developing probable cause to intervene.
At approximately 1720 hours on 02/13/2011 Surf City Police department conducted a traffic stop on and blue 1999 Ford Escort. The vehicle contained the above listed individuals. Surf City Police K9 gave strong indications for narcotics within the vehicle.

A brief search by law enforcement uncovered dangerous toxic chemical paraphernalia associated with Methamphetamine production of “cooking” in lay terms inside the trunk of the vehicle. The vehicle was secured and the individuals arrested.

On 02/14/2011 Surf City Investigators applied for a Search Warrant through Superior Court to Search the residence (913 Cedar Ave. Hampstead NC) and the 1999 Ford Escort. With the assistance of the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Special Services Unit the residence was confirmed to be the site of Methamphetamine production. Items associated with such were seized as evidence or analyzed and destroyed per court order.

The 1999 Ford Escort was determined to contain toxic chemical waste from Methamphetamine production.
All involved individuals have been charged with Manufacturing Methamphetamine and are awaiting pending charges for possession of various precursor chemicals and finished Methamphetamine product. Further investigation by police showed the home owner (Grandmother of Christopher Grady) to also be a victim in this incident as she had no knowledge of what transpired at her vacation property just off Topsail Island.

Chelsea Leigh Cahoon W/F DOB: 05/16/1993 of 2463 Vine Swamp Rd Kinston, NC

Current Charge(s): Manufacture Methamphetamine

Pending other Charges: Yes

First Appearance: 02/14/2011 per defendant

Bound Amount: $75,000.00 per defendant

Precursors Seized: Lithium, Sodium Hydroxide, Sulfuric Acid and Ammonium Nitrate. Others items such as LP Propane Tanks, HCL Generator and various other items used for mixing were also seized.
