Tregembo Zoo says sick bear is getting better
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — There are new allegations against the Tregembo Zoo for the way their animals are being cared for. The allegations are in regards to a black bear suffering from an autoimmune disease.
PETA reported the animals poor health to the USDA. According to zoo officials, Ben the black bear is in recovery.
Zoo officials said they have been treating the bear since March, but according to records the USDA told the facility in late April the problems continued.
“The USDA vet came out, you know I showed her what we had been doing. And of course she has to file a report, of course you have a citation involved with that, and then we have a certain amount of time to correct it. And that’s what we’ve been doing, is correcting the citation,” said Sherry Tregembo, the zoo’s member manager.
The USDA was back out at the zoo on Tuesday and reported “no non compliant items identified during this inspection.”
Zoo officials said that includes the treatment of Ben the bear.
