NEW DETAILS: Wilmington Girl killed in zip line accident identified

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — We’re learning new details about the middle school girl who died after a zip line accident at Camp Cheerio.

According to her obituary, Bonnie Sanders Burney, 12, who went by Sanders, was a student at St. Mark Catholic School. She died in an accident at the camp in the North Carolina mountains Thursday afternoon. The CEO of the YMCA of High Point, David Ozmore, says the tether that connects the harness around her waist to the pulley above broke while zip lining.

“It strikes campers young, old, alumni, counselors young and old,” Ozmore said. “This is a devastating experience. We love Camp Cheerio with all of our heart. We will get through this as a family.”

A memorial service will be Monday at 3 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church in Wilmington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mark Catholic School in Sanders’s name.
