Tiny Titans: Wilmington gym is training national weightlifting champions
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY ) — Crossfit Wilmington is home to to a crew of weightlifting champions. But they might not be quite who you’d expect. These tiny titans are kids!
“Weightlifting is not just a sport. It’s a way to get active. Pretty much, it’s a really good way to help yourself feel like you’ve accomplished a lot in an area where most people just don’t have any experience with,” said Adam McGee, a young weightlifter.
At this gym you’ll find national champs. But these champs can’t even drive yet!
“It’s pretty adventurous because you never know what’s going to happen,” said Ava Davis. Davis has been asked to train at the Olympic Training Center twice now in her weightlifting career.
Last month 3 members of the Wilmington Lifting Club Youth Competition Team brought home 5 national titles from the USAW National Youth Championships in Minnesota.
“The sport of weightlifting is more than just being strong. There is an art form to it,” said head coach Walter Neubauer.
Neubauer is working with the kids to teach them that art.
“Because if anything is kinda off, that barbell is not going to do what you need it to do,” said Neubauer.
But it’s not just about big muscles.
“It helps you run faster, jump higher, and it helps you play other sports,” said champion Reagan Printy.
The kids all agree that if you’re thinking about giving weights a chance, you should definitely go for it!
