‘She Rocks’ brings ovarian cancer awareness downtown

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — “She Rocks” brought hundreds of people dressed in teal downtown Thursday.

It is September and that means it is ovarian cancer awareness month. Thursday was the second annual “She Rocks” Luncheon.

“He had the heart wrenching news to tell my husband and myself that it was ovarian cancer,” She Rocks Co-founder Beth Quinn said.

That was in 2013, two days before Christmas. Beth Quinn said she went in for a simple Gallbladder operation.

“My doctor was still in the room knowing that is was very odd, close to Christmas,” Quinn said.

It was unexpected news and a disease she knew nothing about.

“I had heard of Ovarian Cancer, but knew nothing about it,” Quinn said. “I didn’t know the symptoms. I just didn’t know.”

Because so many others don’t know, Quinn and her best friend Mary Barto started “She Rocks.”

“I wanted to share,” Quinn said.

She wanted to share her story and save lives.

“It’s a disease that’s not talked about,” Quinn said. “Since we’ve founded this organization, there are boocoos of people in New Hanover County that have lost their lives.”

Just this, year she even lost one of her board members Tracy Brown.

“She passed away with a nearly 5 year fight,” Quinn said.

That’s why Quinn is fighting for “She Rocks.”

“It’s about women helping women and funding research,” Quinn said.

This year, Wilmington native and Miss USA 2009 Kristen Dalton Wolfe joined as a keynote speaker and she joined Quinn’s battle.

“Look what she has done with that,” Wolfe said. “Just two years in she has decided that she’s going to believe that she has hope and she is crowned with the mindset of hope and she’s raising awareness.”

As Quinn continues fighting her own battle, her hope is to find a cure to end everyone’s battle.

“It’s an honor,” Quinn said. “It’s a blessing and it’s what we’re supposed to do that we help one another,” Quinn said.

Organizers say they raised $135,000 at today’s event.
