Echo Farms residents continue fight to save their golf course

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Folks from the “Save Echo Farms” movement said it is important that Wilmington City Council sees that they are organized, have funding and mean business when it comes to protecting their public golf course.

“We’re trying to protect that 139-acre green space,” resident John Hirchak said.

Folks tonight were looking to make a statement.

“And that’s part of the reason why we’re here is to let folks know that we want to work out a solution that’s beneficial, that’s potentially a compromise that benefits everybody,” Raymond Groh said.

Supporters said the city is in desperate need of green spaces and the golf course would offer just that, versus more housing.

“And to me those 139 acres are screaming you know bike trails and reintroduced woodland and green space and all the wonderful things that we need now in Wilmington,” Hirchak said.

One man said traffic is a big concern, while others are worried about construction.

“It pales in comparison to having you know five years of bulldozers in your backyard,” said Groh.

The group even has a GoFundMe site to raise funds to help their fight to save the course.
