Law enforcement responds to ‘swatting’ situation in Brunswick County

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, (WWAY) — What first appeared to be a serious emergency is now being called a hoax by the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.

Emily Flax with the sheriff’s office said tonight was a case of “swatting.” She said swatting is the act of deceiving an emergency service into sending police and other emergency responders to another persons home. She said in the case of tonight, the home was one of an innocent bystander.

Flax said law enforcement and EMS crews were staging at several locations in the area. She said the area is now secure and the sheriff’s office will continue to look into the hoax call.
