Church gives out 14K lbs. of food for Hurricane Matthew relief

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A church in Columbus County gave out nearly 14,000 pounds of food to people affected by Hurricane Matthew.

Organizers said they had a line around the building this morning at St. Paul A.M.E Zion Church on Money Hole Road.

From fresh fruit and vegetables, to toiletries and water, each person that pulled up left with what they needed.

Pastor Jerome Belton with Abundant Giving Food Ministry said the Food Bank of Southeastern North Carolina provided the food. He said they set up the distribution at this church, because it was near some of the areas hit the hardest.

“It works, because the people that are right in the area, they really need the assistance,” Belton said. “You know, we had some people that got here for the first time, because the waters finally you know went down, so that their roads are now clear, so they can get out.”

Belton said the church will have another food drive on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. He said they do this every Saturday for their community.
