Proposed Brunswick Guarantee scholarship program could help community college students

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The proposed Brunswick Guarantee scholarship program could help provide local community college students with financial aid.

Brunswick Community College President Susanne Adams said the Brunswick Guarantee would cover tuition and fees for qualifying students wishing to attend the college.

On Monday the Brunswick Community College Foundation will ask the Brunswick County Commission for $200,000 a year for a 3-year pilot project.

“I want students and the parents of those students to know the great opportunity that Brunswick County is allowing them to continue into a post-secondary education, and the fact that individuals need not get into debt in order to complete the first two years of a four-year college degree or the two years of a degree that will lead to the workforce,” Adams said.

Students who qualify for the Brunswick Guarantee must earn at least a 2.3 unweighted GPA in high school and could attend Brunswick Community College within four semesters of graduating from a Brunswick County High School.

Students must remain in good academic standing with Brunswick Community College, meaning a minimum of a 2.0 in college coursework and completion of at least 67% of credit hours attempted each semester.

Students must complete the Brunswick Community College scholarship and federal financial aid application processes annually to remain eligible.

The Brunswick Guarantee would then cover any unmet tuition (at the in-state rate) and fees while funds are available.

Qualified students would be allowed no more than 2 program of study changes.
